Recovering from a nightmare, one Mother's Day at a time

WARWICK, N.Y. – On the first Mother's Day after her husband killed their two young children and then himself, several questions faced Zoey Mendoza: How do you survive a mother's worst nightmare? Eileen Blass, USA TODAY Zoey Mendoza Zimmerman sits on a bench inscribed with her daughter's name in her backyard. How do you be a mother to kids you can no longer hug or kiss? How do you endure a holiday that honors something so precious that was torn from you so suddenly? Mother's Day 2011 came six months after Zoey's husband picked up their kids early at day care, drove to his childhood home and shot each in the back of the head with his grandfather's rifle. In those days Zoey could not sit still or stop crying. She could neither work nor eat. A friend followed her around the house, spoon-feeding her broth. Each night she and her mother slept in the same bed, the daughter afraid to be alone, the mother afraid to leave the daughter alone. On Sunday, Zoey Mendoza Zimmer...

WWII soldier's lost gift to mom returns home for Mother's Day

This is the story of a loving tribute from a soldier preparing for war to his mother on the other side of the continent, who didn't know if she would ever see her boy again. The elaborate pillow sham he sent her, lost for more than 70 years, has finally come home, just in time for Mother's Day. The sham, emblazoned with the word "Mother" and sent in 1942 by Dominic O'Gara from his Army base in California to his mother in the small Massachusetts town of Millville, was discovered last month by a town native on eBay. The hope now is to put the sham on display in the town's senior center, just yards from the house where the O'Gara family once lived. "To me, it's come back to where it belongs," said Margaret Carroll, chairwoman of the town Historical Commission. "It's as close to Mrs. O'Gara as it can get." Donald Lamoureux, who lives in Cumberland, Rhode Island, but who grew up in Millville, spotted an envelope for sale on eBay,...

Apple boss 'disappointed' by new Indiana religious law

Apple's chief executive, Tim Cook, has joined other tech firms in denouncing a law passed in the US state of Indiana, which some argue could allow businesses to discriminate against gay and lesbian customers. Governor Mike Pence signed a bill on Thursday that prevents the state from restricting a person's ability to exercise their religion. "We are deeply disappointed in Indiana's new law," Mr Cook tweeted. "Apple is open for everyone". Mr Cook, who publicly acknowledged his sexuality last October, saying that he was "proud to be gay", added in another tweet: "Around the world, we strive to treat every customer the same - regardless of where they come from, how they worship or who they love." On Wednesday, tech executives wrote to Governor Pence, urging him to veto the bill, known as the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. Among the signatories was Marc Benioff, the boss of US tech firm Salesforce, who subsequently...

Safari users win right to sue Google over privacy

Google has lost a Court of Appeal bid to stop consumers having the right to sue in the UK over alleged misuse of privacy settings. A group of users claim that Google bypassed security settings on the Safari browser to install tracking cookies on their computers in order to target them with advertising. Google said it was "disappointed with the court's decision". One of the claimants called it a "David and Goliath victory". The case revolves around a so-called Safari workaround, which allegedly allowed Google to avoid the Safari web browser's default privacy setting to place cookies, that gathered data such as surfing habits, social class, race, ethnicity, without users' knowledge. Safari is a browser used on Apple computers, iPads and other devices while cookies are small text files stored by browsers which can record information about online activity, and help some online services work. Google had attempted to prevent the action, ...
